Kai Pai Dong AKA Roadside Food Stall - Hong Kong

We are both food lovers at heart and will travel a fair distance in search of that recommended duck restaurant, circle around blocks to find that famous 'dan tart' (cantonese for egg tart) shop or eat in a bustling food stall located in a dark and narrow alleyway. Well, we definitely did all that in this lively urban city where many restaurants stay open past midnight to cater for late-night supper goers.

For a taste of the Hong Kong style street food culture and atmosphere, we found one of the last few remaining 'Kai Pai Dong' (cantonese for roadside food stall) that still exists in the city. Many have chosen to move their businesses indoors into an air-conditioned environment, but some have retained their eating culture. The roadside stall that we discovered is tucked in a dark and narrow alleyway.

Surrounded by warm hanging light globes, strings of intestines, salted mackeral and baskets of fresh vegetables, the chef busies himself in front of his fiery wok.

Andy and I absorbing the atmosphere while we waited for the food to arrive.

We ordered the salt & pepper tiger prawns and ginger soya fish

I had pretty high expectations of how the food should taste and surprisingly, it was not as good as I thought it would be. However, the lively ambiance and novelty of eating in a Kai Pai Dong certainly made up for it!
